Can I alter a dress pattern to be a jumpsuit?

I want to make this and I wondered if I used a pattern for a short fitted dress and then edited the bottom to be shorts instead of a skirt would it still work with a zip in the back. Any advice/crit would be useful. Thanks 🙂

Only if you’re extremely skillful at sewing and draping. The thing is you’ll need to have a center seam which will make the body of the pattern at least 5 pieces. If you have a pattern for shorts that are about the right shape, try overlaying it on the front and back center pieces. Add 5/8″ seam allowance to the center front for a seam and kind of blend it into the front and back centers of the shorts.

This pattern might be adaptable for you, but it costs $19. I only looked at McCalls, but you could check Butterick and Simplicity online too. I’ve never seen the Marfy patterns in a store, but I’ve never looked for them either.

If you’re small enough to wear a boys’ size, you could probably adjust this pattern to work. It’s available up to a boys’ 14. I made a technicolor dream coat for my nephew when he was 4. It was a size 6 and my 4’9″, 95 pound mother could wear it. (Yes, it was big on him but he wore it for years.) You’d have the side front seams to fit to your figure. The zipper is in the front, but you could move it to the back easily enough.

I’d cut the whole thing out of muslin, and start pinning. EcoWeb
