Should the cladding have a lower or higher optical density than the fibres in the core?

The glass cores used in fibre optics are surrounded by a thin, transparent film called a cladding.

2nd question: What do you think is the function of the cladding? (Hundreds of fibres are bundled together to form a fibre tube.)

Any help would be appreciated.

cladding shud hav a lower density. it is required to reduce the value of refractive index to make sure that light is totally internally reflected while travelling along the fiber.
hope ths helps
thnx
