Cleaning a necklace with household products?

Okay so I have two necklaces. I used this thing on a website that said to get a plastic bowl and cover the inside with foil then put your necklace in the bowl with baking soda. After that you pour boiling water over it and it cleans your necklace right? Yeah it worked on one of my necklaces but not the other. I think its because the other one isn’t made of sterling sliver or something and I don’t know what its made of. How can I get the other one clean?

As long as it is not plastic, or have pearls on it, then soak the necklace in ammonia, rinse and pat dry.

Just plain dish soap and an old toothbrush might work just as well, with out too much risk of damage.
