What else can I sew with besides thread?
I’m working on an art project and I’d like to sew with different materials besides thread, but I can’t think of much besides dental floss. Does anyone else have ideas?
hi Shawna, you can use anything you can thread through the eye of a needle, from raffia, string, twisted paper strips, twisted strips of material, or pick threads out of a bit of material that are long enough to use as sewing thread. You could even felt an old wool jumper and cut that into strips. There are lots of different kinds of textured Knitting yarns around, and a wide choice of ribbons – check your local Op shop and see what you can find, not only in yarns, but in cheap bits of clothing etc, and let your imagination go wild! If you don’t have a large enough needle, you can “couch” a textured strip to your base by sewing it on with sewing thread in a matching colour – that way you can coil fabric in a circle or other shape, make patterns, weave different materials across each other, make braids and attach them. Once you get started you may run out of your base material before you run out of ideas! Have fun!
