Long Stem

When I try to grow herbs (for ex parsley) from seeds….I often get a long stem (2 1/2 inches) and?

a couple of leaves on top. I think the stem is growing too long too fast. And I would prefer to see a shorter main stem and more branching stems and leaves. I’m using potting soil in a plastic cup which has drainage holes. Is it too much water that makes the stem shoot up like that? Is there some pruning technique to get more stems and leaves? Thanks.

They’re getting “leggy” reaching for light. Plant seeds in the ground, full sun or buy a grow light if you can only grow indoors.
