What kind of bacteria would cause crystal salt formations on tryptic soy agar plates? Could it be S. aureus,?

I have to differentiate between two unknown bacteria in Micobiology class. So far I’ve isolated my colonies on tryptic soy agar. One was very small opaque colony while the second colony had a translucent cicular shape that only grew in 37 C and not 25 C. It also contained salt crytals that grew all around the second colony.

S. aeurus is positive for coagulate test but negative for oxidase test. You might want to use it as confirmatory test. Most of the time trypic soy agar is used for the confirmation or selective growth of listeria. You might want to do confirmatory tests on that too. Seeing the color and morphology helps to isolate the organism, but are not considered confirmatory test until biochemical tests are done.
