Can a metal plate and screws remain in your body for the rest of your life?
If a person receive surgical treatment by putting in metal plates and screws for the fractured bone, can those plates and screws stay in their for a lifetime, or do they need to be removed after a while? What if they have been there for over 3 years? Are their any hazards that I should know?
Well basically it depends where you get the surgery because sometimes the screws can irritate because they can rub and everything. Also wist the screws being there it will be a big deal if you ever brake your bone in that spot. They don’t necessarily need to be removed but it is nice to not have to worry about them. i have 15 screws in my legs and 5 plates. Some of them will never get removed and others are being removed soon because they are causing me pain. They have been in my leg for close to 2 years. So as long as the screws and plates did there job they are able to be removed and the recovery is pretty simple, basically just waiting for a little bit of tissue to heal. Also it depends on how big the screws and plates were. The bigger they are the more likely that they are not going to get removed.
