Yards Yellow
Are black salamanders with yellow spots on their belly poisonous?
I found this black salamander with yellowish spots on his belly in my back yard. Not a lot of yellow spots by the way, just a few. Is it poisonous?
It is a spotted salamander. They spend most of their lives under ground or under leaves in the forest so that is their main protection from predators.
The only time you see them is in early spring which in New England, where I live, is late March/Early April when they come out to lay their eggs in vernal pools in the woods.
They secrets a mildly toxic substance but it mostly to make them taste bad. So the spots are to remind predators that they are not good to eat.
